Poker has so many variations that follow certain structures of betting as well, but there is a standard protocol observed by majority of the players. Poker players typically act in a clockwise turn. There are mainly five different acts in playing poker, and these are to open, call, check, raise and fold. The act of opening means you are making the initial voluntary bet. It is also referred as opening the pot. To call means a player matches a bet or a raise. The round of betting ends when all players place an equal amount of or no player matches a bet or raise. If there is no call, the player wins the pot. When a player checks, he calls the current zero bet if no one opens the round yet.

Call or Raise?

Checking means refusing to place a bet, and means that he is not willing to open the round and wants to keep his cards and keep the privilege to call or raise in later time with the same round if another player decides to open. In poker games that use blinds, players are not allowed to check on the opening round since live bets are used, and these must either be called or raised to keep the hand. The one who placed the big blind is the only one allowed to rise on the first round if no one wants to rise, this is called an option. To raise means to increase the bet needed to stay in the pot, which requires all players to call that amount if they want to stay in the game. To fold is to lose interest in the pot and discard one hand, which happens if you have a weak hand. Folding is also called mucking when a player already tends to discard a hand face-down.

Forced Bets

In poker, it is important to learn about the forced bets since all variants use these. An ante is a forced bet wherein all players place an equal share of money into the pot prior to the deal. Ante is the forced bet used in stud and draw pokers, since most community card pokers use blind bets. Blind bets or simply a blind is used in the popular Texas Hold’em poker. Two blinds are commonly used but there is a variation that uses three blinds, the last one being paid by the dealer. Bring-in is also a type of forced bet which happens after cards are dealt initially, and prior to any other action. This is commonly used in stud poker and is assigned to the first round of betting when the player’s exposed card shows the lowest. There are also four common betting structures of poker, namely the spread limit, fixed limit, pot limit and the no limit. No limit Texas hold’em poker is featured in most poker TV shows and tournaments.
